Backward— чаще прилагательное или наречие в американском английском. Описывает состояние или движение назад. Примеры: "a backward step" (шаг назад), "move backward" (двигаться назад).

Backwards (с "s") — преимущественно наречие, особенно в британском английском. Указывает на повторяющееся или непрерывное движение назад. Пример: "walk backwards" (идти назад).
