How to do your first taxes in Canada: 2019⁠⁠

This is how I filed my first taxes in Canada in 2019. Maybe something will change in the future, check updates on the Internet.

Why I need CRA account?

1. CRA account allows you to file taxes online: you don't need to pay for sending your tax info in papers as you can send it online.

2. Your will get a response from CRA faster. Processing paper income tax in 2019 took ~10 days - online, and ~30 - in paper.

Steps to create your CRA account:

0. Get T4 tax slips from your employer

1. File tax forms with Free Canadian Tax Return Software. I did my forms with SimpleTax tool which worked though the browser, so no installation required.

It didn't take long, about an hour or so.

2. Print filled forms and send them send by post. Find your - Tax services offices and tax centres - address on official site: https://www.canada.ca/

For Toronto, Ontario it was:

Sudbury Tax Centrea

PO Box 20000 STN A

Sudbury ON P3A 5C1

I sent at the end of April and got a paper response  by post at the beginning of July the same year.

3. Call to CRA. They worked Monday to Friday 7 am to 8 pm (Eastern time).

Papers/info you need for this call:

T4 form for your first tax year in Canada

SIN

Address with zip code

Date of birth

Date when you first entered Canada as PR immigrant

Your first and last name

Your email address

4. CRA employee will guide you while CRA account creation

4.1 you should go to https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/e-services/e-services-individuals/account-individuals.html

4.2 I chose to register with Option 2 – Using a CRA user ID and password

4.3 You need to create a unique login name, password can't be the same as login.

4.4. Write your SIN number

4.5. Choose 5 security questions. Answer should have more than 3 characters.

Important: take a screenshot or write down your

CRA login name + password

Security questions and your answers.

4.6 To finish CRA account registration process the CRA agent who guide you will send you a CRA security code to email that you told them. You should put this security code to a required field to complete your registration. After putting the code you will be inside of your CRA account.

5. Now you can access your CRA account with your CRA login and password and do taxes online.
