То есть вот я сейчас "воюю с Хёрстом", а меня саму от этой войны уже подташнивает и мне надо сделать перерыв, у меня неприятие подобных "людей" на уровне физиологии; говоря церковным языком, эти "люди" одержимы всякой нечистью разного калибра и жутко, когда они свою одержимость позиционируют как высокое искусство, то есть у меня претензии к таким "художникам" больше идеологические и философские, чем какие-то личные, на мой взгляд искусство - это храм, художники - это священники в нем, а нечисть обязана быть далеко за пределами этого храма; то есть если художник не различает тьму и свет, он(она) - не художник, а графоман с психологическими нерешенными проблемами;
Damien Hirst is a true necrophile. Brazen, impudent, mocking.
You know what makes Hirst especially disgusting? It's not the plagiarism at all, but his mockery of the dead—both animals and humans. There once was a "creative" named Max (he emigrated), who stole my concept of the Party of the Dead. Back in 2010, I, Lena Hades, published texts in LiveJournal, and he later "voiced" them, misappropriating the project and injecting politics and political protest into what was my purely existential and philosophical work... later in his PD (Party of the Dead), some people died violent deaths, and other wild things happened, including the tragic loss of his own underage son...
There are people who reek of the grave—a vile, unbearable stench. These people are called "necrophiles," and I have a deep, physical aversion to them that moves me to nausea... They turn death into a disgusting spectacle. Look at Hirst in the 90s, posing for a photo with a "dead head"—wearing a stupid grin on his mug...
In short, our attitudes toward death—mine and his—are diametrically opposed. When I wrote the text for the Party of the Dead, it was exclusively about DEFENDING the rights of the deceased. It was about how you cannot mock the dead, and you cannot take pictures of them or photograph yourself with them in a mocking impulse. For me personally, death is a crucial TRANSITION and the most important boundary between the living and the dead. As for what happens to consciousness at that exact moment (animals HAVE it too! just like humans), science knows absolutely nothing today, much like it knows nothing about consciousness itself—nobody knows WHAT it is and what happens to it at the moment of death...
Hirst, Max from the PD, the serial killer Pichushkin, and other freaks—they all belong to the same sickening gang of necrophiles; they horribly reek of the grave... I can't imagine how anyone could be "Hirst's girlfriend," for example? It would feel like falling into a pool of decomposing sludge at a garbage dump—roughly the same repulsive sensations...
So here I am, "waging war on Hirst," but this war itself is already making me feel sick, and I need to take a break. I reject such "people" on a purely physiological level. To put it in church terms, these "people" are possessed by unclean spirits of various calibers. It is terrifying when they position their possession as high art. My grievances against such "artists" are more ideological and philosophical than personal. In my view, art is a temple, and artists are the priests inside it—and unclean spirits must remain far outside the boundaries of this temple. If an artist cannot tell darkness from light, he (or she) is not an artist, but a graphomaniac with unresolved psychological issues;
Anyway, I need a break from this grave-stench before I can continue "waging war on Hirst again" (wearing a gas mask so I don't feel sick). Turning contemporary art into a psychiatric hospital is simply a crime against art itself...
Let's return, however, to what is bright, to the Light. I once harshly criticized abstractionism and abstraction in my Manifesto of Theography and Theometry,
but Mark Rothko—he is not an abstractionist; he is a true artist. I slightly envy anyone who owns his paintings and can look at them every day.
And yet, look at how many people try to copy him nowadays, completely failing to understand where the Light is, and where the Darkness is.
This text is written by Lena Hades, a prominent Russian conceptual artist and philosopher. She has a long-standing public feud and intellectual standoff with Damien Hirst. She has frequently accused Hirst of conceptual plagiarism—specifically claiming that his famous 2007 diamond skull For the Love of God and his later Myths, Monsters and Legends exhibition appropriated visual concepts from her own pioneering Skulls (1995) and Ars Chimaera (1997) art cycles
